A celebration of British agriculture, this show highlights farm animals of all types from bantam hens to magnificent bulls. As many as 40,000 locals and visitors descend on Stoke Park for the event, which runs each year on Bank Holiday Monday in late May or early June. Families love the food stands, competitions, and animal shows, and it's a great way to show kids where their chicken nuggets and beef burgers actually come from.

Guildford's position on the banks of the River Wey make it ideal for water-based entertainment ­ which is why the Guildford Festival Boat Gathering has been such a phenomenal success for 21 years. Running over a Saturday afternoon in early July, the gathering involves beautifully decorated boats "parading" down the river in a colorful watery pageant which has a different theme each year. Children can participate in special activities put on by National Trust staff.

The festival has been going strong since 1992, featuring appearances by The Darkness, Katie Melua, Blondie, The Charlatans, and Status Quo.

An offshoot of the Surrey County Show, the Surrey Farm and Food Week offers seven days of farm-related walks and events. There are demonstrations of horse-drawn plowing, dog competitions, terrier racing, fly fishing and more. The week's events culminate in the Surrey Ploughing Match and Country Fair, which draws a crowd of 13,000 to watching plowing competitions between 85 British farmers. Free shuttle buses run between the Country Fair and plowing sites.

The festival's hub and main box office is the Electric Theatre, whose riverside café bar is open from 10am daily during the festival. This festival is a great way to entertain kids during the February school break. Based at Guildford's Electric Theatre, it has been welcoming families with children aged 0­12 since 2008. Kids get the chance to watch family-friendly plays, puppetry, and musical productions, as well as participate in storytelling sessions, drama workshops, and craft-making. In total there are over 25 events targeted specifically at children ­ plus a special children's menu in the café.
